Eleanor with one of her horses at golden hour

The woman behind the sanctuary

Beyond the Finish Line

From Service to Sanctuary

For most of her life, Eleanor answered a call to serve.

As a soldier, she dedicated herself to something greater than herself, carrying the responsibilities, sacrifices, and challenges that come with military service. Like many veterans, she eventually found herself searching for a new purpose when that chapter of her life came to an end.

She never expected that purpose would arrive in the form of a horse named Levi.

Levi was more than a horse. He became a teacher, a companion, and a reminder that healing often comes from the most unexpected places. Through him, Eleanor discovered the quiet power of trust, patience, and unconditional connection. He changed the course of her life.

What began as a promise to give one horse a better future soon grew into something much larger.

Nestled on a peaceful property near Kingston, Ontario, Beyond the Finish Line Horse Sanctuary was built from a simple belief: that every horse deserves safety, dignity, and love long after their working days are over.

Many of the horses who arrive here have spent their lives serving others. Some raced. Some were passed from owner to owner. Some simply found themselves with nowhere left to go. Their stories are different, but their needs are the same: a place where they are wanted, protected, and never forgotten.

This is not an adoption agency.

This is their forever home.

The horses who come through these gates are not waiting for another destination. They have already arrived. Here, they will never have to earn their place. They will never have to prove their worth. They will never have to wonder where they will go next.

Every stall, every fence, every pasture, and every act of care exists because of a promise that began with Levi: that no horse who finds sanctuary here will ever be abandoned again.

Today, the sanctuary is home to retired racehorses and rescues who spend their days doing something they may never have truly known before — simply being horses.

Supported through sponsorships and donations, each horse receives the feed, veterinary care, farrier care, comfort, and love they deserve.

And while the sanctuary's mission is focused on the horses who call it home today, Eleanor carries a vision for the future: creating opportunities for retired horses and retired veterans to heal alongside one another, united by shared journeys of service, resilience, and second chances.

Because some lives are spent crossing finish lines.

And some begin there.
