Direct Drive

New beginnings

6 years old · Thoroughbred · Known around the barn as “DeDe”

Some horses enter your life unexpectedly.

Others feel as though they were always meant to find their way to you.

Direct Drive — better known around the barn as 'DeDe' — is one of those horses.

A retired Thoroughbred racehorse, DeDe spent his early years doing what he was bred to do: run. Like many athletes, however, his racing career came to an end after an injury. Fortunately, he had an owner who cared deeply about his well-being and ensured he received the time, care, and rehabilitation he needed to heal properly.

When it became clear that racing was no longer his future, the decision was made to find him something even more important — a perfect home.

And somehow, that search led him here.

From the very beginning, there was something about DeDe that touched Eleanor's heart. Maybe it was because he is a Thoroughbred, just like Levi. Maybe it was the kindness in his eyes. Maybe it was something impossible to explain.

Sometimes a horse simply feels familiar.

Sometimes a horse reminds you of one you've loved before.

For Eleanor, DeDe carries little pieces of Levi with him. Not as a replacement — because no horse could ever be that — but as a gentle reminder of the horse who started it all.

Today, DeDe is beginning a new chapter.

Trust does not come easily to him. The world has asked a lot of him, and he is still learning that he no longer has to worry about what comes next. Every day is built on small victories: a quiet moment together, a gentle touch, a little more confidence, a little more trust.

There are no expectations here.

No pressure.

No deadlines.

Only patience, kindness, and the understanding that healing happens on the horse's timeline, not ours.

Each day, DeDe grows a little more comfortable in his forever home. Each day, he learns that he is safe.

And each day, Eleanor becomes a little more certain that his arrival was not a coincidence.

It feels as though he found exactly where he was meant to be.

And perhaps, in some way, so did she.
